Kansas Farmers Union voting delegates approve policy, by-law changes at 2010-2011 Annual Convention

14 12 2010

SALINA—Kansas Farmers Union (KFU) voting delegates attended the 2010-2011 KFU Convention at the Salina Ramada Inn on Dec. 10-11 to vote on policy and by-law changes and learn from a variety of speakers.

KFU members elected delegates at their county meetings to vote on policy updates, by-law changes and elect board members. Delegate sessions began on Dec. 10 and continued through Dec. 11 when they casted their final ballot.

A change was made this year to policy drafting. Instead of drafting policy changes at the convention, KFU hosted the event in August and finalized the policy at convention. This allowed delegates to spend more time enjoying the convention.

The proposed changes drafted in August were passed. Visit ksfarmersunion.wordpress.com/policy to view the new KFU policy or contact the state office at 620-241-6630 to have a copy mailed.

KFU delegates voted on by-law changes written by Pawnee County President Tom Giessel. The changes included redistricting from six to two districts.

There is now a North and South District, which will each have three representatives not from the same county. Also, those elected will serve three year terms instead of being re-elected each year.

“This will allow more active future leaders to serve on the board of directors,” KFU President Donn Teske said. “The three year terms will bring more stability to the board.”

The second by-law change addressed the number of members required to start a county chapter.

The by-law changes will take affect at the 2011 KFU Convention.

The KFU Board of Directors elected by the delegation are: President Donn Teske of Wheaton, Vice President Daryl Larson of McPherson, John Fairbanks of Onaga, Lavern Potuzak of Agenda, Chris Schmidt of Oberlin, Linda Hessman of Dodge City and Herb Bartel of Hillsboro.

Delegates to the National Farmers Union Convention in San Antonio on March 13-15 were also elected. They are Daryl Larson of McPherson, Chris Schmidt of Oberlin, Herb Bartel of Hillsboro, and Tom Giessel of Larned.
