NFU Reaction to Automatic Spending Cuts

1 03 2013

WASHINGTON (March 1, 2013) — NFU President Roger Johnson issued the following statement in response to the automatic sequestration cuts that are now going into effect:

“Congress has pushed up against one more of too many self-imposed deadlines. Now that sequestration is going into effect, the economic recovery may well be damaged simply because our elected officials in Washington refuse to work together.

“The agriculture committees have come together time and again to craft farm bills that contribute to deficit reduction. These farm bills included responsible policies to provide a safety net for farmers in bad times, invests in renewable energy, boosts rural economies, improves our environment, and offers assistance to those most in need.

“It is way past time for Congress to realistically deal with its own dysfunction, to settle these fiscal issues, and to begin providing the necessary policy certainty for our economy. Then it must soon write a five year farm bill to do the same for agriculture.
